I don’t even know how I ended up with some of these. Ah well, onward!

Daytripper #7
I think this is my favourite issue so far. I’m not sure it’s because all the pieces of the story are starting to come together or just because the death at the end was so much fun, but something about this issue was wonderful. Maybe it was the feeling of having enough of the story that the death at the end felt like it meant something at last. I don’t know, but it was a great issue.

Hawks of Outremer #1
It seems sort of like if the Punisher were set in a fantasy. That might be because he has a skull on his chest on the cover, but it’s certainly one of those bloody fantasy titles. I don’t think I’m quite ready to dive back into the hard fantasy stuff yet, though, if that didn’t catch me. Or maybe it’s just the wrong title.

Tom Strong and the Robots of Doom #1
So much of this just bothered me. Like his mother looking like his wife. And how she just strips at the end of it. And how the golden man disappears and I’m supposed to feel something despite not knowing who he is. It’s like I’m missing a lot of continuity. Though the cover feels so nice…

Young Allies #1
Rikki AND Gravity! Two characters I thought I’d never see again! And, you know, a bunch of other characters I’ve read in passing or never at all. I enjoyed it, though it might just be the thrill of seeing the first two in a series again.

Yep, late again. Horribleness abound and all that.

Daytripper #6
Fun! Depressing, of course, as Daytripper usually is, but still fun. This time, it threw me for a weird loop where I thought one guy was Bras, but it wasn’t and, well, it’s turning into a really fun trip. Also, it’s pretty close in time to the first issue and the pieces are starting to fit together. Except the death. That’s still not making much sense.

Frenemy of the State #1
Rich, privileged girl gets roped into being a CIA agent. At least she’s not terribly traditional in the sense of the club going Hollywood girls and actually knows the difference between Alice in Wonderland’s book and movie, but I still don’t really know how I feel about this one overall.

Comic Run 04-15-10

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

I’m burnt out. Just a little. And I need to take a break from all of the stress, projects I’m working on, various other things that are causing me to slowly go a little insane and just do other things. Like read comics.

Daytripper #5
Bras as a kid was pretty damn adorable. Also, I’m thinking that this death at the end of every issue is more of a gimmick than anything else because I’m liking how the whole story of his life is winding together at this point that the death aspect of the book really isn’t playing any part in the overall story.

Kill Shakespeare #1
Well, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead. I couldn’t resist, honestly. It’s a book about Hamlet out to kill Shakespeare! I need to reread Hamlet and every play I’ve ever encountered by Shakespeare because this look like it’s going to be a fun public domain crossover chock full of references to obscure bits catering to literary geeks.

The Light #1
As near as I can figure, this is a book about people who look at light and proceed to blow up. I don’t know why, I don’t know what’s causing any of this, I don’t know why that guy accepted it so easily or anything. It’s just people looking at light and blowing up for no reason.

Song of Saya #2
I’m actually rather enjoying this one. It’s weird and Saya’s a huge mystery, despite her explanation and other explanations of what she is. It doesn’t make sense yet, but we’re only in issue two and soon Josh isn’t going to be the only one going insane.

The A-Team #1
It’s the freaking A-Team! I had to at least give it a look. The cover has NOTHING to do with the book and they don’t really operate as a team at all during it, there’s no character set up and no reason to care about any of them as you go through. I guess I might have liked it better if I’d ever actually watched the original show.

Daytripper #4
Oh the pieces and how they’re coming together. I still don’t understand why Bras dies at the end of every issue, but the slowly filled holes that are forming in his life are a lot of fun and it’s nice that this one did quite a bit of fleshing of the earlier issues. Although I have to admit, I’m pretty much not counting the last page as continuity anymore.

Ghost Projekt #1
I am just confused about this one. The front half is a quick read since most of it is people speaking in Russian and there’s no explanation about what they’re doing robbing what looks like an abandoned nursery with a mad scientist lab attached. And then there’s a murder, a kid that is probably important, and exposition heavy Russian lady that doesn’t actually explain anything. I have no idea what it’s about, though I am annoyed that “Projekt” is spelled wrong.

Fewer comics from now on for me. I haven’t found more work yet, so I’m getting long running comics in trade.

Choker #1
Run down city, guy down on his luck working in investigation, seems kind of typical. Still, there’s enough screwed up everything floating around in the stew there that’s going to keep me coming back. A promise for his old life back in exchange for someone’s head? Drugs that turn you temmporarily into vampires? And written by a guy called McCool? Yeah, I’m going to have to see more.

Daytripper #3
Three issues and a picture is starting to form. I don’t quite get the picture yet, but there’s one there. There’s a few definites now. Bras. Jorge. And that he will be dead by the end. But all events that happen are in continuity. His death is not, but everything else is. Watching the rest of this unravel should be fun.

Comic Run 02-04-10

Between job hunting and working on my anthology/book//novel-in-story thing, I still have the comicses.

Dingo #3
First: “Douche nozzle” remains the funniest insult ever and I still have to use it some day to make someone seem threatening. Even if using it will make me burst out laughing. I SHALL DO THIS. And second, I think I get it now. Brother’s soul kept in scary little teddy bear. Part of it got out. Dingo has a demon dog following him around everywhere. I think I get this.

God Complex #3
I don’t honestly remember what happened last time anymore, but this time was a fight. I’m sort of finding myself detatched from the characters and interested in the way everything plays out, though. I mean, they brought in the Gorgon for an issue, but it seems to be a comic done via events rather than characters. And an abundance of double page panelling.

Sweet Tooth #6
Honestly, I don’t really care too much for Jeppard’s back story when there’s Gus in containment to unravel in an arc called “Captivity.” I was more interested in that than his old hockey days and how he got to be a fighter. Returning his wife to their old house, that part was great, though.

The Secrets of Sarah Winchester #1
The most surprising things about this is that Ben Templesmith’s name appears nowhere on this title. It reads like one of his books, the art is like his art and yet, no name. I am confused.

Daytripper #2
I am thoroughly confused and intrigued at the same time. I started reading it and thought he was the same guy from the first issue having a flashback into some part of his life and a trip he took with his friend. Then he died at the end and I thought maybe it was someone who looked like him. And then I realized it was about the time he died when he was 21 as opposed to when he died at 32. And now, I don’t know what’s going on.

Echo #18
I don’t know why, but it feels like ages since the alst issue. And it’s still just as fun, but now with the pace picking up, I’m hoping we get more than one or two events an issue.

Uwritten #9
The great and magical jailbreak. I loved it. I really did. All of the pieces are falling into place, though the Harry Potter parallels are getting a little strong now that we have both a know-it-all brunette and a redhead with a smart mouth and comic relief value. Now I need to decide whether I want to continue this in issues or trades, but I think trades for this one might be best. I want to reread the story and my issues don’t hold up well on transit.

Weekly World News #1
Ed Anger is amazing. He’s the crazy folk you see yelling at everything he doesn’t like for being un-American and angry because now aliens, intelligent apes and Bat Boy (Who doesn’t seem to be able to close his mouth for some reason) are even in the country. Although once again, my favourite is the alien. All level headed and a lovely foil, he’s fun.

Comic Run 12-11-09

Friday, December 11th, 2009

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these, eh? Well, time to get right back into it.

Daytripper #1
Um. I don’t really know how to digest this one. With a title like “Daytripper” and all of this build up about how he’s a writer and references to all sorts of things all over the place and whatnot, that ending has me incredibly confused. The build up was, I thought, to something vaguely supernatural starting to happen. Was that a one shot?

Echo #17
You know, for an issue that was essentially an information dump it wasn’t that bad. I understand none of the science explained save for the bits that were teh “action movie version” but I now know the history of Annie. The whole thing is just guys sitting around and talking and, while I’m sure it was important, I’m a little anxious for the story and action to start picking up again.

God Complex #1
It was a good bit of fun first issue to the series, which is good considering how much of it I’d seen from Oeming pimping it. The two page spreads with dark boarders kept throwing me off and I wasn’t sure where my eyes were supposed to go from panel to panel as the whole bloody thing is kind of dark and it’s hard to tell, but the story of a modern day pantheon of Greek gods is always fun and one who quits to the ire of everyone else just makes it better.

Although, I do have to note one rather annoying thing. Whoever was doing the lettering wasn’t paying attention. Typos. Obvious typos and an error with setting the characters in a line of dialogue. These errors should not happen, people.

Unwritten #8
It took me entirely too long to figure out where in the series this was taking place and if I’d grabbed an old issue. It’s a nice look into the other side and other people involved in the Tom in jail arc, but while I did enjoy it, I’m not sure it was worthwhile if the kids or the warden just disappear in the next arc. They all really do seem like fleeting characters in the overall scheme of things, though the kids joining the main arc might make for some interesting developments. Especially is Tom isn’t so good with kids.
