Comic Run 06-10-10

June 10th, 2010

I don’t even know how I ended up with some of these. Ah well, onward!

Daytripper #7
I think this is my favourite issue so far. I’m not sure it’s because all the pieces of the story are starting to come together or just because the death at the end was so much fun, but something about this issue was wonderful. Maybe it was the feeling of having enough of the story that the death at the end felt like it meant something at last. I don’t know, but it was a great issue.

Hawks of Outremer #1
It seems sort of like if the Punisher were set in a fantasy. That might be because he has a skull on his chest on the cover, but it’s certainly one of those bloody fantasy titles. I don’t think I’m quite ready to dive back into the hard fantasy stuff yet, though, if that didn’t catch me. Or maybe it’s just the wrong title.

Tom Strong and the Robots of Doom #1
So much of this just bothered me. Like his mother looking like his wife. And how she just strips at the end of it. And how the golden man disappears and I’m supposed to feel something despite not knowing who he is. It’s like I’m missing a lot of continuity. Though the cover feels so nice…

Young Allies #1
Rikki AND Gravity! Two characters I thought I’d never see again! And, you know, a bunch of other characters I’ve read in passing or never at all. I enjoyed it, though it might just be the thrill of seeing the first two in a series again.

Comic Run 06-05-10

June 5th, 2010

My week blew up on me, so I’m late. Ah well, this sort of thing happens.

Codebreakers #3
Stanley! Actually, this issue had a weird sort of all over the place feel to it. I get that there’s back story that must be told and character depth and all that, but I was having a little trouble figuring out who was doing what at any given time. Still, though. Stanley!

Her-Oes #1
On recommendation, I picked it up. Although honestly, this girls comics thing that Marvel is doing has the worst naming ever. It was a kind of cute story, but a little too high school girl romance for me. It’s nice to see the heroines all kind of out for one another from a social perspective, but I’m just not all that interested in their love lives.

iZombie #2
Interesting. A little scattered, but interesting. There’s a vampire sorority house and rules of eating that the redhead is breaking, Spot has a job working at a retirement home and Gwen is painting every memory she’s absorbed. Not much happened, but I suppose we need some setup. Still, it’s two issues of set up. Something really has to happen.

Mystery Society #1
Well that was a fun one. It has a bit of that… familiar feel to it, but it’s kind of nice to see the rich couple are actually getting their hands dirty as opposed to just playing puppet master and sending people out to do the dirty work. Also, I’m curious to see what the arrest was all about.

Another week and no number 1s!

Choker #3
You know, he was almost a sympathetic character until that back story. Now I’m sort of without sympathy and left feeling like the book is trying to paint as bleak a picture as possible. Which is fine, well and good, but generally I like some hope and uplifiting mixed in with everything else. Without it, it’s kind of… well, a depressing read.

The Guild #3
It’s a fun back story, and a nifty ending to the series, but I’m thinking this whole thing really just works better if you’ve watched the series as opposed to just reading the book. There’s a lot of little things in there that you catch from the series.

Comic Run 05-21-10

May 21st, 2010

A day late. Ah well, there are things tomorrow.

American Vampire #3
YAY VENGEANCE! This is just fun. Vampires can be fun again! Not angsty, not absorbed in romance, just a whole lot of fun seeking out revenge and hunters and the hunted and all that fun stuff. It’s about time we got some of this. It’s been far too long.

Devil #4
I’m pretty sure this story didn’t actually make any sense. Caged devil wants out, but she can’t actually ever leave. And the monster that isn’t hurt with explosions, cars running into it or gunfire gets cut with a sword. Yeah, not sense making.

Joe the Barbarian #5
NO! JACK! I really liked this one, though. Lots of interplay between the two universes and there’s even a little bit of a conversation with mom this time around to show that there are dire troubles in both worlds. And the lines between the universes blur a little more.

Kill Shakespeare #2
I’m not sure how I feel about this anymore. Mostly because little progress was actually made in the story. They start out and mutiny goes afoot as soon as Hamlet gets knocked out. I thought they’d be travelling in a smaller pack, I guess, and it would focus more on Hamlet’s journey than the evilness of King Richard.

Comic Run 05-14-10

May 14th, 2010

Yep, late again. Horribleness abound and all that.

Daytripper #6
Fun! Depressing, of course, as Daytripper usually is, but still fun. This time, it threw me for a weird loop where I thought one guy was Bras, but it wasn’t and, well, it’s turning into a really fun trip. Also, it’s pretty close in time to the first issue and the pieces are starting to fit together. Except the death. That’s still not making much sense.

Frenemy of the State #1
Rich, privileged girl gets roped into being a CIA agent. At least she’s not terribly traditional in the sense of the club going Hollywood girls and actually knows the difference between Alice in Wonderland’s book and movie, but I still don’t really know how I feel about this one overall.

Comic Run 05-07-10

May 7th, 2010

Sorry for the delay, I had a life yesterday. Whoops.

Codebreakers #2
YAY! It was another fun issue and I am entralled for some reason. Something about it is just so much fun. But besides that, there’s still the question of just what this code is and why they need him to break it. I guess it has something to do with him being like… I can’t remember his name, but Mr. James Bond let’s call him. It should be fun. Although, dammit, if you have a knife, try a little harder to break free. You might be missing toes, but you could hobble quickly.

Ghost Projekt #2
This was a lot more interesting than I expected, though after being not so ceremoniously kicked out of the scene last time, I’m not sure why Will is having drinks with the Russian agent, especially if he has such trouble with liquor. Still, good enough plot device to keep things moving and it looks like something interesting in this one.

iZombie #1
Well, that wasn’t quite expected. A world of supernatural horrors and apparently the hottest zombie ever. If she turns Sue, I’m running. But still, it was good setup and interesting premise. Zombie girl is a grave digger, digs up freshly buried corpses so that she can eat fresh brains before they spoil and keep from turning Night of the Living Dead. And now, solving the murder of the guy who’s brain she just ate. Interesting.

Plans for May

May 2nd, 2010

April is over and I beat the script! With not much over, granted, but I hit massive creative drain and life problems and whatnot and stopped. But now, I have a whole new month! Less yesterday and today. And I am coming up with plans.

Plan the first: Free Comic Book Day! Which already happened. And I missed the free comic books. Whoops. But I did get another Scott Pilgrim book and a random other book that was only $10 and looks to be fairy tale re-imaginings. It looks nifty and was cheap!

Plan the second: SPE Site. Once I actually figure out how everything is going to function on the site, it should be a breeze. Until then, it’s a damn lot of planning and wireframes and whatnot. Really, all I actually have is the layout and a loose idea of functionality. Still, I want it ready to go for the end of the month.

Plan the third: Writer site. I’m converting my portfolio into a writer site right now and I need to start actually doing a few things with it. I have plans for what I’m going to put on there, but I hope to have a schedule for posting there and to actually be posting regularily by the end of the month.

Plan the fourth: Work. I need a job. A nice stable one that gives me regular hours that interferes with everything else I’m working on. I can accept that for a regular paycheck, though. I kind of miss having those.

Plan the fifth: Drafts. I need to finish all the rough drafts for my stories by the end of the month, hopefully sooner. The sooner I can get them done, the sooner I can make them good and everything can start to fall into place. Or something like that.

Plan the sixth: Videos. I want to get all the long videos until July done this month. Because, you know, crazy things. I just like overloading myself and all that.

Wish me luck!

Comic Run 04-29-10

April 29th, 2010

Big haul today. Which was probably dumb since Free Comic Book Day is on Saturday. Ah well.

American Vampire #2
Okay, I’m pretty sure that the Stephen King story does fit pretty seamlessly into the main story, or it will. Still, I think I’m enjoying the main story more, what with her now left alone to figure out what being a vampire entails while her only potential teacher goes off to somewhere else. This is going to be fun.

Garrison #1
Near as I can tell, it’s the future and surveillance has rendered crime inert because the American populace has given up their right to privacy. And then there’s a guy named Garrison who has a mental hit list and is going around killing a large number of people. This is all I got so far.

The Great Unknown #3
At bloody last! I don’t know that it’s worth the wait because the top half of the book is essentially a tirade on piracy in the modern age and it takes it’s sweet time getting on with the story, but it’s still nice seeing another installment of it again. So, I’ll be seeing the next issue in another six months, right?

The Guild #2
Aw, she’s so cute with her finally figuring out the game and having it turn her into one of those “WoW is awesome but I still have a life” pre-zombie kids. It’s only a matter of time, though, young Codex. Also, I really am kind of starting to detest that psychologist she goes to. Just a little.

The Last Unicorn #1
Accurate to the book rather that the movie, I presume, but nothing actually happens in this issue. She is the last unicorn, she leaves her forest and meets a schizophrenic butterfly who tells her about the red bull in no certain terms. It’s, like, four pages of story. Maybe six. The art is very pretty, though.

Song of Saya #3
That was actually a pretty fun mini overall. I’m a little confused by a couple of the elements, but honestly, it’s probably because I haven’t let the story digest yet. It was delightfully eerie the whole way through and the question of reality was always there. And brain surgery is still terrifying.

Comic Run 04-24-10

April 24th, 2010

Yeah, a little late. It’s been a busy week.

Devil #3
You know the part where the bad guy exposits his entire back story and they try to make him a sympathetic/non-sympathetic character like they do with manga villains? Yeah, that was this issue. Way to go on making a western comic, guys.

Joe the Barbarian #4
I’m pretty sure hallucination girl is from issue 1. Not entirely certain, but I think she is. Aside from that, it’s nice to see the duality playing into it more and dammit I love this series.

The Magdelena #1
Wow, what? If they can screw around with Christian mythology as much as that, then I have nothing to worry about. But dammit, it’s a book that I’m not going to bother with. Jesus’ bloodline produces sexy magic heroines somehow. Just not my sort of thing.
